I passed a church sign last week that read, “Jesus is coming soon. Hopefully before the election.”

Perhaps like me, you are listening to the commentary and growing weary as we debate the two most unpopular candidates in recent history. You might be wondering, “What’s the point of all of this?”

At Women Doing Well we help women discover their purpose as the first essential step to knowing how God is calling them to give. In the course of an Inspiring Generous Joy (now WDW Signature Event) experience, women participate in a Purpose Tournament from which they derive a two-word purpose statement. Mine is “cultivating growth.” Yours might be “unearthing treasure,” “inspiring joy,” “affirming significance,” or “expanding territory.”

As I have examined the candidates, compared platforms, listened to debates, and watched our country wrestle with two very different visions of what America should become, I keep wondering, “What is God’s purpose in this election?.”

If I had to write a two-word purpose that reflects what I think God’s is doing through this upcoming election, it would be “revealing truth.”

Truth: God Is the Only Perfect Ruler
No matter who becomes president, God is the only perfect ruler. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a perfect president. Scripture is clear that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. For those with eyes to see, God is revealing the truth that He is the only perfect, faithful, trustworthy, wise, just, and merciful Ruler. Period. And for those of us who acknowledge God as our true Ruler, yet another promise awaits: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance” (Psalm 22:12).

Truth: God Is Not Limited By Who Is In Power
Throughout biblical history we see excellent leaders and we find terrible leaders. God used them all for His purposes. The people of God were not to put their trust in rulers or authorities, but in God. As believers we will have great opportunities to show God’s glory and proclaim His goodness no matter who is in office. Our job is to trust God and live out His principles no matter who is leading us.

Truth: God Is in Control
I take real encouragement from the truth that as perfect Ruler, God is in ultimate control of all things. Regardless of who takes up residence in the White House, Psalm 22:28 reminds us that “…dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.”

So as you go to the polls next week, be encouraged. By then you will have done your homework, you will have prayed, and you will vote as God directs. Between now and then you will have wonderful opportunities to be a generous listener to those who may not agree with you. You will likely have opportunity to bless someone else either financially if they have need, with a smile or with helping hand. I love that God is a giver and as we give He makes himself known.

The good news is that whatever the outcome, God will be working out His purposes in it all. In short, God’s got this. I love how 1 Chronicles 16:31 puts it: “Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns!’”
