We asked Renee Lockey from Tuesday’s post to share how she continues to grow in her relationship with God. Here are her practical suggestions for staying in His Word.

So how do you ground your life in Scripture?
For the past few years I’ve made it my habit to kick the new year off with a Bible reading plan:  a 30, 60, or 90-day commitment (usually made with others) to read God’s Word daily. Some years it’s been a struggle to maintain the daily discipline, while other years it’s come rather easily. But regardless of the effort it takes, what I’ve consistently found looking back is that God always proves to be faithful in providing something valuable for the year ahead—a reminder, an inspiration, a warning, or a hope of things to come.

What is your plan for growing in the Word this year?
When my current study comes to an end, I’ll most likely return to individual books of the Bible as God puts them on my heart. Or, I’ll choose a devotional and let my Bible reading revolve around each day’s entry. And sometimes, I just keep it simple and pick a verse or two on which to meditate. Honestly, these are often the most fruitful days of all.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Find a time to read God’s Word daily.
  • If its helpful, pick a reading plan (I love The Bible in 90 Days)
  • Recruit some friends to read with you! I love to set up a Google page where we can share what we are learning together.
  • If you like to journal, take time to document how God has spoken to you through Scripture. It’s great to look back and see how alive and active His Word is.
  • Pray before you read! If you find yourself struggling to follow through, seek God’s help before giving up. Our enemy knows how powerful God’s words are, and he will work overtime to discourage you.
