What God Says About Your Purpose

One of the findings the Women Doing Well research study revealed was that women desire to know their purpose. But, you might ask, “How can we scripturally know we have a purpose?”

As one who is passionate about God and passionate about purpose, I love discovering what God’s Word says about His plan for us. Several of my favorite scriptures assure us we have a purpose to fulfill while we are on this earth. Let’s take a look.

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. Colossians 1:16

God is the Creator of all things. You are not here by accident, by mass production, or by arbitrary order—but created through Him and for Him. You were created by God with a purpose for how you live your life for God.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book

before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13:16

Stitch by stitch, God lovingly knit you together in your mother’s womb, using many beautiful varieties of yarn color and exquisite texture (your own unique blend of skills, talents, and gifts). Picture an adoring Father gently guiding each strand and pattern, creating a one-of-a-kind you with an ordained and perfect plan for every single day of your life.

The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me. Psalm 138:3

God will do what He sets out to do! After creating such a masterpiece, God does not give up on you—He steadfastly knows the plan He has for you and will continue to invite you on His journey. The joy of discovering your purpose is a glorious peek into your unique design so that you can join Him and wholeheartedly fulfill your purpose.

And, my favorite:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:29

Did you catch the beginning of that verse? “God works for the good of those who love him.” He has good things for us. And even more importantly, read the end: “called according to his purpose.” He has a purpose for you!

I pray you will let each of these scriptures wash over you, allowing you to feel God’s confirmation and love. Remember:

  • You were created by God and for God
  • You were designed by Him in your mother’s womb
  • You can be assured that He will fulfill His purpose for you
  • You can be certain that He has created and called you to a purpose (a really good one!)
